Michael Morpurgo has been called 'The Father of Children's Literature'. His books have won many awards and have been translated into over 26 languages. Private Peaceful has won awards in the UK, France, Switzeerland, and the USA. Michael's novels adapted for stage or screen include: War Horse, Private Peaceful, Kensuke's Kingdom, Why The Whales Came and Out of The Ashes. For two years, 2003-2005, he held the post of Children's laureate and travelled widely, taking his love of story to children in the Western Isles of Scotland, Wales, Ireland, England, all over Europe and event to Moscow and Soweto in South Africa. In 1976 he and his  wife Clare set up the charity Farms fo City Children which now runs three farms welcoming over 3000 children a year.

Years ago, Tony taught drama in London schools and then moved to Glasgow to be Artistic Director for TAF Theatre. He became Artistic Director of the Unicorn Theatre in 1997. Soon after he arrived, he began the campaign to build the new theatre. He has directed adaptations including 'Tom's Midnight Garden', new plays including Red Red Shoes, mysical theatre including Clockwork, plays for the very young including The Cat Who Ran,  experimental work including Play Antartica, and family shows including Cinderella. Billy the Kid is his last show for the Unicorn. Next year he will be artist-in-residence for New York University specialising in Theatre for young audiences.

Adam trained in theatre design at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and in 2003 became group winner of the Linbury Biennial for Theatre Design. Theatre designs include Much Ado About Nothing at the Salisbury Playhouse; Private Lives at the New Wolsley and My Mother Said I Never Should at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Opera designs include Katya Kabanova, Teseo and L'nfedelta Delusa for English Touring Opera and Duke Bluebeard's Castle and Blond Eckbert for The Opera Group. Work with the Royal Ballet includes Children of Adam, Tanglewood and Sensorium. Adam has previously designed Play Antarctica and Red Fortress at the Unicorn. 

JOHN AVERY (Music And Sound Composer) Read More

John has composed for several Unicorn shows but Billy the Kid is his favourite. His other recent work includes: Can We Talk About This and To Be Straight With You, DV8; The Thrill of It All and Void Story, Forced Entertainment and The Imperfect Storm, Candoco. A long term collaborator with Wendy Houstoun, he has composed for the acclaimed Haunted and Desert Island Dances. He has worked on many film and television productions with award winning directors such as David Hinton, Turner Prize nominees Jane and  and Louise Wilson, and Jo Cammack.

Phil joined the Unicorn as Production Manager in May, and with his fantastic team is responsible for all the technical bits and bobs of the two theatres here. He has worked in Birmingham, Lancaster, Bolton, Manchester, Oldham, from Technician (pushing big buttons) to Deputy Chief Executive (signing big cheques). Recently he has worked the pantomime in Harrogate, on Thriller Live!, with Northern Broadsides, and his good friends Lip Service.

From 2003–7 Mia was part of the ensemble at Eugenio Barba’s Odin Teatret and a member of ISTA (International School of Theatre Anthropology). In this time young people saw her perform as a penguin, a balinese monkey, the Snow Queen on stilts, the little match stick girl and a music vagabond. She is an associate and choreographer for Company of Angels in London and has worked at the Young Vic, NT Studio, Royal Opera House, Southwark Playhouse and the Unicorn. Recent international performances she directed include Lorca’s Bodas de'Sangre at the 13th Havana International Theatre Festival in Cuba, Feast Kakhulu and Carnival under the Rainbow both for Hilton Arts Festival in South Africa and Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle (2010- 11) with Aarohan Theatre in Nepal and India. Mia received 5 stars in the Times for We are Shadows which she directed for Spitalfields Music Festival, it had a children’s chorus of almost a hundred rats!
