This famously controversial German nationalist opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, is transported into Wagnerian times in David McVicar’s honest and humane production. Gerald Finley makes an acclaimed debut in the longest role in the operatic repertoire, Wagner’s philosophising cobbler Hans Sachs.

Vladimir Jurowski expertly leads the London Philharmonic Orchestra, The Glyndebourne Chorus and the 17-strong cast through Wagner’s rousing celebration of music, art and philosophy. This Glyndebourne production of a colossal work promises to inspire and entertain in equal measures.

Sung in German with English subtitles.

David McVicar's staging, updated to the early nineteenth-century era of Wagner's childhood, was in many respects admirable: real people emerged, and the action was rich in detail and humour.

The Telegraph

Wagner’s entire score is songful, pouring forth benevolent counterpoint from prelude to final chorus. And perhaps the greatest joy of this evening was in hearing Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra weaving so rich and detailed a narrative.

The Independent

Finley [...] is extraordinary both vocally and dramatically.

The Guardian

Jurowski and the London Philharmonic are so vibrant that they bring insight into the inner dynamic of the music.
